Definition

An eating disorder characterized by massive food binges followed by purging or other compensating behaviours to try and rid the body of unwanted calories.

Characteristics

Uncontrollable eating in excess followed by self-induced vomiting or misuse of diuretics and laxatives, fasting or excessive exercise to avoid weight gain. Feelings of guilt and shame, which lead to secretive eating and visits to the bathroom after eating.

Examples

Before going out with friends you eat dinner and then induce vomiting so as not to ingest calories and look thinner.

Physical Complications or Side Effects

Dehydration, dizziness, headaches, swelling of fingers, ankles and faces, irregular menstrual cycles, damage to the esophagus, teeth and gum problems, bad breath, stomach problems, chest pains and other heart ailments or ultimately cardiac arrest and/or death.
